CD4+ T cells participate in the nephropathy of canine visceral leishmaniasis BJMBR
Costa,F.A.L.; Guerra,J.L.; Silva,S.M.M.S.; Klein,R.P.; Mendonça,I.L.; Goto,H..
Renal involvement in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is very frequent. The renal lesions of humans and dogs are similar but their pathogenesis has not been clearly elucidated. There is growing evidence that the cellular immune response is involved in the pathogenesis of immunologically mediated glomerulonephritis. Since T cells could participate in the pathogenesis of nephropathy, in the present study we investigated the possible involvement of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in the nephropathy of canine VL. Six dogs naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi from the endemic area in the Northeast of Brazil, the town of Teresina in the State of Piauí, were studied. An expressive inflammatory infiltrate of CD4+ T cells both in glomeruli and in interstitium...

Chronic renal failure in equine due to ascending pyelonephritis predisposed by cauda equina syndrome: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonteque,J.H.; Granella,M.C.S.; Souza,A.F.; Mendes,R.P.; Schade,J.; Borelli,V.; Costa,A.; Costa,P.G..
ABSTRACT This report describes the case of a mare, of the Campeiro breed, used as an embryo donor, which had recurrent cystitis and urinary incontinence crisis. Clinical signs evolved to progressive weight loss, anorexia, apathy, and isolation from the group. Physical examination showed tail hypotonia, perineal hypalgesia, rectal and bladder sagging compatible with signs related to cauda equina syndrome. Complementary laboratory and sonographic assessment, and necropsy confirmed the diagnosis of chronic renal failure (CRF), which was attributed to the ascending pyelonephritis. The examination of urine culture showed growth of bacteria of the genus Streptococcus sp. This is a rare case in the equine species where the lower motor neuron dysfunction led the...

Effect of D-alpha-tocopherol on tubular nephron acidification by rats with induced diabetes mellitus BJMBR
Nascimento Gomes,G.; Barbosa,F.T.; Radaeli,R.F.; Cavanal,M.F.; Mello Aires,M.; Zaladek Gil,F..
The objective of the present study was to determine if treatment of diabetic rats with D-alpha-tocopherol could prevent the changes in glomerular and tubular function commonly observed in this disease. Sixty male Wistar rats divided into four groups were studied: control (C), control treated with D-alpha-tocopherol (C + T), diabetic (D), and diabetic treated with D-alpha-tocopherol (D + T). Treatment with D-alpha-tocopherol (40 mg/kg every other day, ip) was started three days after diabetes induction with streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, ip). Renal function studies and microperfusion measurements were performed 30 days after diabetes induction and the kidneys were removed for morphometric analyses. Data are reported as means ± SEM. Glomerular filtration rate...

Evaluation of the predisposition and clinical impact of BK virus replication in kidney transplant patients Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOURA,ELVIANI B.; PETZHOLD,SILVIA V.; AMARAL,AUGUSTO R.; DEBONI,LUCIANE M.; FRANÇA,PAULO H.C. DE.
ABSTRACT The BK virus (BKV) produces a subclinical kidney infection in immunocompetent individuals. However, viremia may occur in kidney transplant patients with ongoing immunosuppression. BKV-associated nephropathy (BKVN) has no specific treatment and is a leading cause of organ transplant loss. In this study, we evaluated the predisposition and the clinical impact of BKV replication in kidney transplant patients during post-transplant monitoring in a reference institution in Brazil. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data generated during routine outpatient follow-up were retrospectively collected. BK viremia was investigated using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Of the 553 participants, 7.4% (n = 41) presented BKV replication. Of these, 16 (39%)...
